Vent Tuesday - To what or who do you identify with?

Hello everyone, today Vent Tuesday will be focused on racial identity. As you may have heard in the news, a young lady over the Spokane chapter of the NAACP has been outed for not being and African-American although she identifies with this race. She has caught a lot of "blacklash" (see what I did there) for her stance but remains steadfast in her position. So the question I would like to ask is, does racial identity matter? Should we be able to identify with another race although we are not apart of it? Tough question to answer indeed but I believe it is something that we must take a gander at.

As the times move with force, we are confronted with a myriad of scenarios and situations that we never seen in the past or it was taboo to address in our communities. It is cool to be black, yoga looks appealing and foods from other parts of the world are now more interesting the ever. As the ever so infamous Paul Mooney once said, "Everybody want to be a nigga but nobody wants to be a nigga"! Sure there are lots of things that looks attractive on the outside, but we must not forget that being black is only glamorous from the outside. Until you deal with segregation, discrimination, inferiority complex, classism, etc., then reality is only subjective. Before we begin choosing what race we want to belong too we might want to at least think about the history and what affect will it really have on your life. Until next time, I am you, you are me.
